Jim Schell has just started A-1 lessons at Seaschell Steppers every Wednesday. Dancing starts at 7:00 p.m. and ends at 9:00 p.m. It is a combined class alternating tips for main stream/plus workshop and then A-1. There are two separate groups of dancers. Some are dancing the mainstream/plus workshop followed by a separate group of dancers who are doing the A-1 class. The fee is $4.00 per dancer. He's only done one Wednesday at this time. Those of us who are interested are committed main stream/plus dancers but we thought we needed some new mental stimulation just for the heck of it. Where do we dance A-1? Rest assured it won't be in the very near future.

Jim is fairly modest (errr except when he is at a party) and he will not tell you that he is one of the most sought after callers in Southeastern New England. He is wonderful to listen to, and even greater to dance to, with his wonderful voice and style. We asked him to tell us how he got started.  He says:

Joyce and I started dancing 26 years ago. I had to be dragged to my first class. At that time I had no idea that after that night it would become another way of life for both of us.

My calling career began when I was dared to do a singing call on an Amateur Callers Night. I really enjoyed it. After that I was hooked and attended Earl Johnson’s Callers School in Sturbridge, MA.

I called my first dance on March 24, 1984, a dance which was hosted for me by many of my Square Dance friends. At the end of this dance I was approached by a group of dancers that wanted to start a new club. They hired me for the club and it was called the Sea Shell steppers of Acushnet, MA. I continue as their caller for dances and classes to this day.

Later, I was asked to become the club caller for the Spares and Squares of Canton, MA, the Town Howlers of Portsmouth, RI and the Scrambled 8's of Walpole, MA.

In addition to the Sea Shell Steppers, I am the club caller for the Scrambled 8's and the Town Howlers.

I enjoy traveling and guest calling for many clubs throughout New England, and have called at every New England Convention since 1984.

I am a member of Callerlab, the Old Colony Callers Association and the Narragansett Callers Association.

Note: Jim also is one of the Good Ole Boys, a duo that rocks the Square Dances in Northeastern New England.
